Desert West provides a full-menu of services. In addition to regular well-woman examinations, our practice specializes in a variety of women’s health issues.

Normal and High-Risk Pregnancies
Desert West physicians have helped bring thousands of babies into the world and we consider each to be a special moment in our practice history. Our providers work with both normal and high-risk pregnancies. We encourage you to use our Baby On Board for information on testing, pre- and postnatal care and our pregnancy due date calendar. Remember…we are here to make this experience as happy as possible for you and your entire family.
Menstrual (Period) Problems
When it comes to one’s menstrual cycle, most women learn in their first several years exactly what is normal for them. Whether it’s heavy periods, clotting, intense pain which leaves you unable to participate in everyday life or other challenges, your physician at Desert West will work with you to determine the issue and provide treatment options.

Among the choices available to many women is a stop-the-flow procedure called endometrial ablation.

Infertility
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in ten women will have difficulty conceiving or maintaining a pregnancy. Whether you have tried unsuccessfully to become pregnant for six months, have a history of infertility or are trying to conceive after age 35, Desert West physicians are here to help.

Our providers will work with both partners to determine the cause(s). The first steps often include a) a physical examination for the woman, b) reviewing both partners’ health histories, and c) tracking ovulation at home. There are many options for couples experiencing infertility and with patience and perseverance; many will achieve a full-term pregnancy.

Urinary Incontinence / Pelvic Organ Prolapse
The involuntary loss of urine, called urinary incontinence, is experienced by women twice as often as men. It can range from slightly bothersome (loss of a few drops of urine while running or coughing) to debilitating (loss of a large amount of urine with little or no warning thereby keeping women from leaving home). Pelvic organ prolapse, when the bladder drops from its normal spot, is often linked to strain during childbirth or following hysterectomy.

Your physician at Desert West Obstetrics & Gynecology now has a number of options to treat urinary incontinence. These can range from lifestyle changes, Kegel exercises and medications to a bladder leakage/sling procedure.

InTone Device for Urinary Incontinence
Whether you experience occasional leaks or more frequent incidents, you don’t have to live with your “weak” or “overactive bladder” any more. InTone helps women regain control of their bladder function, regardless of age, size, or shape, whether you leak a little or a lot. InTone’s patented technology combines the benefits of gentle muscle stimulation to exercise and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, with guided biofeedback so you can see proof of your progress. InTone actually treats female bladder leakage at its root cause.

Menopause & Hormone Replacement Therapy
For even the healthiest women, peri-menopause and menopause can bring with them a variety of symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disruption, heart palpitations and other challenges. Should these or other symptoms begin to affect your enjoyment of daily living, Desert West OB/GYN encourages you to discuss options with your provider.

We are committed to providing a personalized treatment plan to help you through this time of transition. Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, is successfully used by millions of women to replace the hormones that their ovaries no longer produce (typically estrogen and progesterone). Use of HRT can substantially reduce or eliminate symptoms and, in addition to other benefits, has been proven to protect against osteoporosis and improve mood.

Your provider will work with you to determine the proper level of hormones that’s right for you. We believe in using the lowest dose for the shortest amount of time.

There are several options when it comes to HRT. Conventional hormone replacement uses estrogens derived from the urine from pregnant mares and the progestin is a synthetic hormone. The FDA approved drugs, which can be taken orally or via a skin patch, can be purchased at any pharmacy with a prescription.

Bioidentical hormone replacement uses hormones that are chemically identical to human hormones. These are taken orally and are available with prescription through special compounding pharmacies.

BHRT Pellet Therapy — Desert West OB/GYN now offers a quick and easy way of delivering bioidentical hormones. Following lab work to test your hormone levels, BHRT pellets derived from soybean and Mexican yam plant sterols are painlessly inserted under the skin of the hip using a local anesthetic. A new pellet is re-inserted approximately every four months. Pellet therapy addresses symptoms without the inconvenience of daily pills. There is a $250 per insertion fee (cash only) as most insurance companies do not cover this therapy.

Hysterectomy and a Robotics Option
Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of part/all of the uterus and may include the removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries. The procedure is often required due to a diagnosis of cancer, fibroids, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain or a number of other conditions. It is the second most common surgery for women in the United States and depending on your health history and reason for surgery, can be performed both traditionally (open) or minimally invasively.

A number of Desert West physicians are now performing hysterectomies using the da Vinci Surgical System. Women who are candidates for this precise minimally invasive procedure experience a quicker recovery, significantly less pain and better outcomes than traditional open surgery. The da Vinci hysterectomy surpasses the limits of conventional laparoscopic surgery as well. Better yet, the procedure reduces the need to convert to an open procedure, is covered by most insurance and can be scheduled at both Banner Estrella and Thunderbird Medical Centers. To learn more, talk with your doctor or visit the da Vinci Surgical System website.

Birth Control (Temporary & Permanent)
Every woman has her own preference when it comes to family planning. Fortunately physicians at Desert West work with each patient to determine what is best for her. Among the options:

Surgery-free and hormone-free permanent birth control by Essure. Learn more by clicking the button below.

Discover Essure

Mirena is a soft, flexible intrauterine device that releases small amounts of hormone locally into your uterus. It is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and lasts for as long as you want, for up to 5 years. Learn more about Mirena.

In-Office Ultrasound
Both gynecology and obstetric patients can now take advantage of our in-office ultrasound services. An on-site technician provides clinical ultrasounds for both obstetric and gynecological problems, often on the day of the patient’s appointment eliminating the need to schedule and register at an imaging center.

In addition to prenatal diagnostic use, Desert West offers expectant parents a Gender Reveal package for $50 which includes a two dimensional ultrasound, gender determination and two black and white photos in a keepsake folder. Images are best between the 14th and 16th week of pregnancy and guests of the parents are always welcome!

Cervical Cancer/HPV Prevention
Today medical science understands that the human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical cancer. The good news is that it can be prevented by regular testing. The team at Desert West Obstetrics & Gynecology wants all of our patients to understand the importance of testing for the cancer-causing types of HPV along with their annual Pap test. We encourage you to spend a few minutes watching this interview segment, visit www.theHPVtest.com and talk to your provider about reducing your risk for cervical cancer.
Nutritional Supplements
Through every stage of a woman’s life, there is a need for specific adjustments in nutritional intake…from the use of prenatal vitamins to the need for extra calcium and vitamin D after menopause. Not all supplements are alike which is why Desert West providers trust Theralogix.

The reason is that all Theralogix supplements are well researched, evidence-based and every formula has been approved by a medical board after detailed review of the scientific data. If your provider has recommended a Theralogix product, you were also given a Provider Referral Code (PRC) which allows you to order Theralogix supplements at a preferred customer price. Chiropractic Services

According to the American Pregnancy Association, there are numerous benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy including nausea control and relief of back, neck and joint pain. Other patients can utilize chiropractic for back pain, headaches and other related issues.

Chiropractors that have been trained to work with pregnant women may use tables that adjust for a pregnant woman’s body, and they will use techniques that avoid unneeded pressure on the abdomen. Some chiropractors take a specific interest in prenatal and postnatal care.

Desert West has a list of chiropractic referrals of those especially open to caring for women dealing with various health issues and those who are pregnant.

Bryan Mack, DC, from Camelback Chiropractic regularly schedules patients at the Desert West Anthem office where he combines a deep chiropractic philosophy with proficiency in applied kinesiology. To schedule with Dr. Mack, call 623-872-0002.
